An Odd Week

Hello you lot. How’s it going?

Um… right. Where to begin…

Been a strange week this week. Monday I went to work on a ‘spare’ shift and literally got paid to sit in a building and read a book for 12 hours (ok, 10.5 hours, we left early). How stupid is that? It really brought home to me the utter ridiculousness of working for a living. What a complete waste of time.

Got home Monday night to find my fridge had broken. There was a pool of dampness on the kitchen floor. The compressor’s gone I think. Been busy eating all the frozen stuff but it’s starting to get smelly in there so just gonna have to chuck what’s left out. Waste not want not and all that, but still it’s better than getting ill (or fat).

There was also a message Monday night on my answerphone from a very frail sounding old lady who had been trying to get hold of someone but who evidently had been dialing the wrong number (several times). It was the most heartbreaking thing you ever heard. She sounded frustrated and confused, and then the croaked “love you” on the end of it… I took down the number and called her Tuesday to let her know her mistake. The conversation was a strange one. She must be very deaf because she kept saying “Hello!” loudly, over and over, until I was almost shouting down the phone. I eventually explained what had happened, she replied “Must have been a wrong number”, and promptly hung up on me. Not how I expected it to go at all, but at least she knows now.

Today someone turned up to clean the hall carpets. I assumed the landlord had arranged it, gave them some water, and let them get on with it. They did it, left, left the carpet damp and smelling of cleaner, and when the landlord finally called me back turns out he knew nothing about it. Either it was a mistake or it’s a scam. I’m currently waiting for the other shoe to drop. I already called the police.

Did some karma yoga at the centre tonight after class. Figured I had some things to work out with the Universe. Not only did I sweep the halls but I also cleaned the toilets (I had a lot to work out). It was only as I finished that someone told me they’d already been done. The Universe having a wee chuckle at my expense. Ah well. Hopefully that bought me some extra time, or something (time for what though?).

Like I said, it’s been an odd week so far, let’s just hope it doesn’t get any odder. Tomorrow, hopefully, I’ll get my fridge fixed in time to go for a bike ride in the lovely warm weather.

Then maybe Thursday, maybe Friday, (maybe both), I can finish writing part one of my noir novel, Get Away Clean. I had finished it already but became dissatisfied with the last chapter. It skipped over way too much story. So I’ve inserted two more chapters, written one of them; I just need to write the other, re-write the last chapter, and it’s done. Then it’s on to parts 2 & 3!

And I need to meditate. It’s the only thing I didn’t manage to get done off my to-do list today. And when your list only has four things on it, that’s pretty rubbish, innit?

Doing a night shift Friday night. Not looking forward to it. Means I’ll sleep through most of Saturday probably (missing an open day of yoga at the centre I would have liked to have gone to). Then Sunday it’ll be housework ready for a long week of early shifts starting Monday. Just more reasons to quit my job and start doing something I love, as if I needed them.

Om, my friends. Peace be with you. x

Life & Stuff & Things Like That

Bon Iver’s got a new album out!! To celebrate I’m peppering this post with a few of his tunes for you to enjoy whilst you read. Lord knows how long they’ll last, so get ’em while they’re hot! 🙂

Y’know, I considered deleting my post of yesterday, it being full of talk and no action; and what’s the point of that? But then I thought sod it, you can’t delete the past. You’ve just got to learn from your mistakes and move on. So, no more wishy-washy wishful thinking. From now on it’s do, or do not; there is no try. 😉

So, with that in mind, check out my doings yesterday. Spent the day performing some karma yoga at the Sivananda Centre. I was involved in setting up the rooms ready for each day, helping people find where they had to be, cleaning, cooking, carrying, stuff like that.

It was a very full day, with a yoga session at the end and a trip to the osteopath in the middle, and I was pretty pooped by the end of it. But I didn’t mind, as spending the day with lovely people doing something worthwhile together is well worth the effort. We need more of that in life.

Speaking of yoga, check me out: I managed to do the scorpion for the first time last night. Wasn’t easy mind! What with my achey shoulders and the day of work I did I was well shaky. But still I gave it a go and I didn’t land on my face, which works for me, lol. 🙂

Obviously that’s not me, though if I’d known that’s what I’d be doing last night I’d have definitely got the camera out, lol. It’s amazing to think how far I’ve come in the past 8 months. From not being able to touch my toes to doing, well, that! Heck of a change, let me tell you.

Apart from all that I haven’t been doing a lot recently. I have a habit of writing big ‘to do’ lists, and then moving things from one list to another, never actually doing any of them. So I put all that aside for a while and just did whatever came naturally, which seemed to be ‘snooze’ apparently.

But I also got quite a bit of writing done. I’m about one third through the book I’ve been working on, and if I just keep plugging away I’ll have it done by the end of the summer.

And I’ve taken a few more recipe card pictures. Check out one of the out-takes.

Just got two more to do then I’ll have a set of six. Right now it’s just a question of weather. Need strong sunlight to make them come out nice, and we keep getting lots of rain in the UK at the moment. But everything comes with time, and if I don’t have them done in the next few weeks I’ll be surprised.

Right, think that’s everything. Got a few hours to do some writing before I have to go to work. Hope you enjoyed the tunes. Buy/download/rip any one of his albums (or his other project The Volcano Choir) you won’t be disappointed. 🙂

The Longest Day

Nope, not a recommendation of a movie to watch (though if you’re in the mood for an epic war film there’s worse out there), today is the summer solstice in the UK, when the sun barely sets and all the druids come out to play.

It marks the start of the summer, hopefully the last one I will spend in darkness. Ok, that’s maybe a bit over-dramatic, but my job does require me to sit at a desk in a room with no windows for 12 hours a day; and I just made a promise to myself that this time next year I won’t be doing that anymore.

Not sure what I will be doing. I’d love to get published as an author. That’d be the perfect job for me. Or even get a film produced. Anything to do with writing really.

Or I could teach yoga, that’d work. Got a year to practice and get good, then I just need to do the teacher training course and I’m away.

Whatever it is it won’t be the same old thing somewhere else. I want more freedom, more creativity, more joy, and more peace in what I do. The money doesn’t matter anymore, only the return on my investment.

Want to hear corny? It was birdsong made me realise enough was enough. I heard it the other night and I knew that’s what I needed more of in my life. So I’m on the search for freedom and birdsong and company and joy, wherever they may be. And I’ve got a year to do it in. Wish me luck.

A Moment to Reflect

Been away for a little while; just thinkin’, and doin’, and not worryin’ about stuff too much. Went on a retreat, did some writing, been at work, done some yoga. It’s all good.

Got a few little bits to share that I hope you’ll find edifying. First up is a wee clip for the late great Mr Bill Hicks.

Wise words from a giant among men. At the end of the day, no matter what happens, it’s just a ride. Remember that.

And here’s some philosophy from an unexpected source, Chuck Lorre; producer of such TV comedies as Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory.

Always been a fan of his vanity cards, and every now and then you get a little gem like that to enjoy.

And finally, just in case you ever consider taking life too seriously, here’s a monkey on a bicycle.

Cheers. 🙂
